Welcome to Day 90 of

To Be A Product Manager

These days the weather are super sultry in Shenzhen. I decided to take the bus to office, because now a normal 30-min walk to office in the morning will make me sweaty and unable to work in the first 10 minutes.

But before I went out, I stayed in my apartment reading for another 30 minutes, in order to get away from the peak public transportation. And there you go, this morning I got a nearly empty bus.

And today’s task is also simple, we need to launch our next version website, which you can check it http://www.vrviu.com/.

Eventually we decided to find a professional to help us check the wording at the end of last month, so there’re some changes on layouts that need to be made today. The designer, the front end engineer and me, we worked closely this morning and made that happen. Now the website should look good both on PC and mobile.

In the afternoon, I started doing research on mini programs, which is a new section on WeChat. Since WeChat is taking the 30% time of cellphone users in China, it’s a good time to give people more accessibility within the app. They have already merged payment, online shopping, games, transportation and hotels services successfully, and I have to admit that I can live in Shenzhen without having any cash on me, all you need, is a smartphone with 4G network.

I’m thinking about the possibilities of VR/AR in mini apps. What could be done to help more people get a quick taste of VR and is there any way we could help people with our tools in VR.

Goals

  • Website launch
  • Mini program research

What I’m pondering

If you read my yesterday’s post, you know I was inspired by Max Deutsch’s daily blog and M2M project. Last night, I though a lot about the balance pf short term goals and long term goals. And I think,

It is always good to have specific short term goals, which help you achieve your long term goals. But there also should be gap goals, which help you connect and bridge the 2 parts together.

What I mean by that?

For example, my short term goals, I also call them daily goals, they are written down on a spreadsheet, and I track them every night before going to the bed. They’re specific with results and the time I put in.

As for my long term goals, one of them is moving to Japan in 2020, and work&live there for at least 2 years. They’re based on my daily goals, like blogging and learning Japanese.

But I’m missing the middle part, the gap goals. They are things you need to put in effort everyday, yet you don’t have to wait for a couple years to see them happen. Like the experiment I did last month, I talked to girls on Tinder every day with same questions and purpose, and at the end of the month, I could write a research about Chinese users on Tinder, which hit 1,700+ view within 24 hours on my Chinese blog.

It’s time for us pay attetnion to your short term goals, long term goals, as well as mid term goals — GAP GOALS.

Let’s see what I come up with next.

My name is Zake Zhang, a newbie VR product manager based in Shenzhen, China. I’m thinking what if I write daily product journal for 1,000 days?

Thanks for reading and let’s keep on hacking!

Zake
