Welcome to Day 93 of

To Be A Product Manager

Just get back from a 1-day off this weekend, feeling a little tired today. Weather is still sultry, cannot really walk on the street for long.

I arrived at around 9:30AM, and started to list out my tasks for this week and also catch up with what happened during this weekend in VR. Then I dived into my WeChat mini program research again, because I want to discuss the mini program possibilities with VR on Tuesday or Wednesday.

My mentor provided me a lot of inspirations and thoughts on potential user scenes, the only thing in front me is figuring out the why for each conclusion I’ve made.

Tencent has made very strict rules with mini programs, for example your development package should be under 2mb(used to be 1mb early this year). And after watching their announcement videos, analyzing the pros and cons, as well as their clarification to media. I realized that

Mini program is created to solved a very specific problem, then cut off the relationship with customers and wait for being used for the next time.

Because you cannot really do anything with marketing and broadcasting on WeChat, since you are not allowed to share mini programs in your social feeds, only direct message to a friend or group.

So a light, content oriented tool should be the best choice for mini program. For example, a simple and efficient calendar, or tools like Pocket and Evernote, they are all very popular mini programs in WeChat.

Goals

  • Mini program research
  • Product planning meeting
  • 5 VR videos a day

Challenges

Since I joined this startup, I’ve seen so many new faces joining us, while I’ve also witnessed 3 people’s leaving. Today, I waved my hand to the fourth colleague.

Both of us finishing our bachelor degree in an ancient Chinese city called Xi’an. He’s very hardworking and has the desire to become somebody in the near future.

However, I can tell he’s not happy with his current position and what he was doing in the past 6 months, especially after we switched our business plan from B2C to B2B.

In the past month, I’ve seen 2 close colleagues’ leave, which makes me somehow realize how real and cruel the competition is in Shenzhen.

Cannot get away with this pressure, but to be honest, I’m having a lot of fun in my first 100 product manager life, and wish getting more challenges later.

Always curious about what happen around you, and push yourself to higher standard. Have a motherfucktitude and patience to tackle every challenge in front of you.

My name is Zake Zhang, a newbie VR product manager based in Shenzhen, China. I’m thinking what if I write daily product journal for 1,000 days?

Thanks for reading and let’s keep on hacking!

Warm Regards,

Zake
